  • HarmonyHacks, Make School

HarmonyHacks is a hackathon, or a place with a mild competitive spirit to build and code minimum viable product solutions to some of society's problems. Some values we hold true to our organization is that more minorities should participate in STEM careers. Everything in coding uses STEM, and our prize winning categories correlate with that. Winners will show their creative twist on solutions to help solve societal problems, such as the gender wage gap, social welfare issues such as poverty, and age discrimination. At Harmony, we believe that everybody should enjoy coding. Even looking at the statistics, simply not enough minorities, be it girls, people of color, or other demographics, code. We host this hackathon not only to inspire students to create solutions to societal problems, we want students to Ignite Their Passion.

  • NorCal FIRST LEGO League Jr Expo, Intel Corporation, Folsom

FIRST LEGO League Jr. is designed to introduce STEM concepts to kids ages 6 to 10 while exciting them through a brand they know and love − LEGO®. Guided by adult coaches, teams (up to 6 members, grades K-4) explore a real-world scientific problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc. Then the teams create a Show Me poster that illustrates their journey of discovery and introduces their team. They also construct a motorized model of what they learned using LEGO WeDo kits and LEGO building parts. In the process, teams learn about teamwork, the wonders of science and technology, and the FIRST Core Values, which include respect, sharing, and critical thinking. At the close of each season, teams come together at Expos to strut their stuff, share ideas, celebrate, and have fun! Come out and learn how our FIRST LEGO League Jr teams propose solutions to help the cities, towns, and places we call home reach new heights. In BOOMTOWN BUILD, Teams will tackle the questions - What if you could build a better world? Where would you begin? Learn more at www.firstinspires.org

  • Sea Air and Land Challenge , Seneca Valley High School

The Sea Air & Land Challenge, nicknamed the SeAL Challenge, is an Office of Naval Research Sponsored STEM initiative in which teams of high school students learn about the engineering process by creating a robotic system that will be used to compete in challenges which mimic missions encountered by the military and first responders. The students work during spring semester, in either classes or after school groups, to design and develop the robotic systems; this could be a submersible for the underwater Sea Challenge, a drone for the Air Challenge, or a land rover for the Land Challenge. On Challenge Day, the teams of students come together to compete and determine whose design best meets the needs of the mission!
