Join us as we learn about dancer and roboticist, Catie Cuan. Cuan combines her passion for dance, and robots, to investigate ways of helping people feel more comfortable around machines (or robots), especially in medical settings. We’ll celebrate Cuan’s accomplishments as we create dynamic drawings using simple DIY robotic contraptions made of motors, markers, tape, and a variety of recycled and repurposed materials. Set your machine in motion and watch it leave a trail of unexpected patterns. This program is made possible in part by a IF/THEN® Gender Equity Grant, a program created in partnership between the Association of Science and Technology Centers.

How can we achieve an inclusive robotics industry? Let's have an UNCONFERENCE to talk about challenges and actions. Robotics can improve the world, but the robotics industry needs improving. First, we need many more people to get involved. Celebrations of robotics like the US National Robotics Week coming up on April 3-12 aim to increase the number of people (particularly women and underrepresented groups) aspiring to careers in robotics. But we lose women and minorities from the field faster than we add them. So until we’ve addressed the underlying reasons why robotics lacks diversity, while other fields have changed significantly, until we’ve developed an actionable agenda, then we won’t have an inclusive robotics industry. An inclusive robotics industry will be more innovative, but it is harder to achieve. Let’s continue working towards this goal by coming together for an unconference to: Share our stories Find common ground Explore the issues Relate successes and best practices See what works in other places What is an UNCONFERENCE? An unconference is a participant-driven meeting, organized, structured and led by the people attending it. There are no powerpoints, no speakers, no preset agenda. You have the mic.

The Sea Air and Land Challenge is an introduction to engineering through the use of robotics. Teams of 3-10 students (high school, clubs, home-schooled) may build a submersible to navigate underwater, a drone to fly, or a land rover to traverse terrain in order to compete in a mission which mimics those encountered by first responders or our military. On Challenge Day, Friday, April 30th, teams come together to showcase their robotic systems as well as learn about STEM careers.
